Based in Chicago and New York’s Hudson Valley, StretchMetal and the Atmospheric Music Alliance are a nonprofit music organization dedicated to supporting ambient artists and expanding public understanding of ambient music through performance, education, and shared listening.
Ambient music is a genre of music that creates a sense of atmosphere. Just as ambient lighting affects how we feel in a space, ambient music uses sound to shape an environment or accompany everyday life. It often explores slowly evolving sounds, sustained tones, and found sounds that invite listeners to slow down and engage in the present space around them.
By introducing its history, practices, and evolving forms, AMA brings ambient music to broader audiences through live performances, educational initiatives, record releases, and public-facing programs, expanding its visibility as a contemporary art form. AMA documents and archives ambient music through releases on StretchMetal Records and an extensive video library, building a lasting and publicly accessible record of contemporary ambient practice.
